Storm Austen: Hazards remain as clean-up continues across St Helier

Friday 23 October 2026 — afternoon update
Fallen trees, damaged structures and debris continue to pose hazards across St Helier following Storm Austen, despite an easing in the winds.
An Orange Wind Warning has replaced the Red Wind Warning.
Parish teams are continuing to assess damage, clear obstructions and make affected areas safe. A fresh shift of six sweeper drivers has now arrived to clear storm debris from roads across the Parish. Please give vehicles and crews plenty of space to work.
Please avoid unnecessary journeys, keep clear of damaged trees and structures, and respect all barriers and closures.
Town Hall customer services open
The Town Hall customer services counter has reopened.
You can also contact the team on 01534 811811 if your enquiry can be handled by phone.
Refuse collections moved to Saturday
Refuse collections scheduled for Friday 23 October will take place on Saturday 24 October instead.
Please place your refuse out as normal and ensure it is ready for collection.
Cemeteries and footpath closures
Green Street Cemetery remains closed due to a dangerous tree.
Fallen trees have also been reported at Mont à l’Abbé and Surville cemeteries.
Fallen trees at Parish cemeteries will not be cleared until Monday 26 October. Please avoid visiting these cemeteries if you can while assessments and safety work take place. Please do not attempt to move branches or pass beneath damaged trees.
The footpath at Parade Gardens opposite the General Hospital was closed earlier today due to debris and concerns about the safety of trees.
Trees, debris and incidents around town
Parish teams have been working hard throughout the early hours of this morning and this afternoon, with incidents reported during the day including:
- A fallen tree at Snow Hill, which was caught on electrical cabling. Jersey Electricity was informed and Islanders advised to keep clear of the tree and any cables.
- An incident involving a fallen piece of roofing in Seale Street, resulting in a road closure by Jersey Fire and Rescue crews with support from St Helier Honorary Police.
- A fallen tree at People’s Park.
- Damage to a kiosk in Liberation Square.
A substantial clear-up also took place at Ruette Pinel, and crews dealt with broken glass scattered across Ann Street after a glass bin blew over.
Conditions can change as further hazards are identified. A route being cleared does not mean surrounding trees or structures have been confirmed safe.
Electricity supplies and electrical hazards
In its noon update on Friday, Jersey Electricity reported 17 incidents across the Island, with around 70 customers without power. Three incidents had been fixed during the morning.
Assessment, repair and restoration work is continuing. Some additional customers may experience temporary interruptions while repairs are carried out safely.
Please stay well clear of damaged electrical equipment, fallen cables and trees touching cables.
