Battle of Jersey commemorations

The anniversary of the Battle of Jersey commemorations were held in the Royal Square on Saturday.

The walking group met at St Martin’s Church in the morning and followed the route of the Militia who marched from their Parishes into Battle in 1781.

After reaching Town, the walkers joined the Jersey 1781 Militia and the Jersey Scout Band to form a parade. The parade left the Town Hall, marching up the high street and into the Royal Square where the first round of muskets was fired.

Senior Procureur du Bien Public, Peter Pearce welcomed everyone to the event before introducing local Historian Ian Ronayne who spoke about the Battle and the Dean who made a blessing.

Members of the public then assisted with the re-enactment of the famous painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson’ by JS Copley, which dramatically depicts the Battle.

The group then made its way over to the Town Church, where St Helier Junior Ambassador laid a wreath where Major Peirson is buried inside the Church.
