Storm Austen: Parish services, closures and useful contacts

We’re bringing together confirmed Parish service changes, wider closures and useful contacts on this page. We’ll update it as further information becomes available. (Updated 12:41)

Please also keep checking the Government of Jersey’s Storm Austen updates, Jersey Met and official police channels, as advice and arrangements may change.

Refuse collections

Refuse collections scheduled for Friday 23 October will take place on Saturday 24 October instead due to the adverse weather conditions.

Please place your refuse out as normal and ensure it is ready for collection.

Weather and safety advice

A Channel Islands Red Wind Warning has been issued. Jersey Met is forecasting very strong winds from Thursday evening, with the strongest conditions expected early on Friday. Gusts could reach 70–80mph.

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue through Friday before gradually easing in the afternoon. Travel disruption, fallen trees or branches and localised flooding are possible.

Please avoid outdoor activity on Friday morning where possible.

Secure loose outdoor items ahead of the strong winds, including garden furniture, bins, plant pots and trampolines.

Check Jersey Met’s latest forecasts and warnings for current conditions and advice.

Schools, colleges and childcare

All Government of Jersey schools and colleges, including Highlands College, will be closed on Friday 23 October.

For individual childcare arrangements, please check directly with your nursery, childminder or after-school club.

Youth projects

All Jersey Youth Service youth projects will be closed on Thursday evening, 22 October.

Arrangements for Friday evening will be reviewed on Friday morning. Please check Jersey Youth Service’s official channels for updates.

Sports centres, libraries and parks

Sports centres will be closed on Friday until at least 3pm. Please follow Active Jersey’s official social media channels for reopening updates.

Jersey Library and Western Library will be closed on Friday morning.

Howard Davis Park, Coronation (Millbrook) Park and Sir Winston Churchill Park will be closed on Friday. They will be assessed on Saturday morning and reopened if safe.

Millennium Park will remain open, but its facilities will be closed until weather conditions improve.

Recycling and green waste

La Collette Recycling Centre and the Green Waste site will be closed on Friday 23 October.

Health services

Emergency, urgent and maternity health services will continue to operate as normal.

Please only call 999 for an ambulance in a life-threatening emergency, and only attend the Emergency Department if you have a serious illness or injury requiring emergency care.

Hospital outpatient appointments: please attend Friday appointments as planned if it is safe to travel, unless Health and Care Jersey contacts you to advise otherwise.

Patient Transport Service: a decision on Friday’s service is pending. A further Government update will follow.

All patients with appointments in the UK have been contacted.

CAMHS at Bermuda House: the service will be closed on Friday. Two duty nurses and a duty doctor will monitor the duty phone remotely and review any crisis appointments at the hospital. Some appointments and reviews will move to Microsoft Teams where appropriate.

Government customer support

The Union Street Customer Hub will remain open as normal.

Travel and roads

Please check directly with your airline, ferry operator or bus provider before travelling for the latest information about cancellations or service changes.
