Initial consultation July 2024

The Parish of St Helier acquired Parade Gardens on 19 July 1856, but it is unclear as to when the existing Playground was established within the park, although we know it was established many decades ago and over the years, the park has been updated and refurbished.

The current play equipment in the existing Playground is outdated and in need of replacement. This project gives an opportunity to create new play areas that will introduce exciting and inclusive play equipment.

Increasing access to playgrounds provides numerous benefits for children of all ages, as research shows that a well-designed playground will:

  • Entice children to play and learn key developmental skills
  • Provide opportunities for children to practice a range of social, emotional, physical and mental skills
  • Boost the amount of physical activity children get.

Playground activities like swinging, climbing and sliding may appear to be “just fun” on the outside, but they initiate important body systems that aid healthy child development. The movements children perform in a playground build both gross and fine motor skills, along with core strength.

Playground play also stimulates the vestibular and proprioceptive systems: sensory processes that control balance and coordination, which develop better body awareness and aid sensory development, often bringing relief to children with additional needs such as autism and ADHD.

This project is an opportunity to improve, enhance and future-proof the play area within Parade Gardens and to work cohesively with other publicly accessible play areas in St Helier by introducing varied play equipment and experiences that encourage children’s development.
