Cost of Jersey driving licences will increase for the first time in six years

From the beginning of 2024, the charge for the renewal of a 10-year full licence will cost £70 – a rise of £20 from the current amount of £50.

And the cost of six-month provisional licences will rise to £30 from £20.

The online driving licence service has also been expanded to allow islanders to renew their provisional licence – as well as full licences – online.

In addition, those wishing to learn to drive can now apply online for a first provisional driving licence.

Infrastructure Minister Tom Binet approved the increase, which was requested by the Comité des Connétables.

Chair Mike Jackson said: “This is the first increase in charges for a driving licence since 2017. The increases are in line with the change in the retail price index over the last six years.

“We are also very pleased to announce that the online driving licence service has been expanded. For many parishioners, a well-designed online service is now a more convenient option than a paper form.”

The online driving licence service allows a selfie as the most convenient option for a photograph.

Some documents, such as proof of identity and test pass, will still need to be provided to the parish before the application is processed.

The charge for a driving licence covers the time and materials for issuing the card licence (including security features to comply with the 3rd EU Directive on Driving Licences) and also contributes to the ‘Parish Roads Account’ (to maintain the by-roads).
