Twinning with Mykolaiv, Ukraine unanimously approved
The Parish Assembly has unanimously approved the twinning memorandum with Mykolaiv, Ukraine.
This twinning proposal has come about after an event held on 12th December 2022, which proved extremely successful, and after Ukrainians living locally expressed interest in such a twinning. The Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Syenkevych, has welcomed the proposed twinning, and therefore the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, and both St Helier’s Procureurs du Bien Public have recommended this twinning memorandum with Mykolaiv, Ukraine.
Last year, following Ukraine’s invasion on 24th February, to support and show solidarity for Ukraine, the Parish of St Helier become one of Jersey’s collection centres. With the first anniversary of the conflict approaching, St Helier has approved this twinning memorandum of understanding with Mykolaiv, a major shipbuilding port in Southern Ukraine with a pre-war population of 470,000. Its digital sector flourishing before the invasion, Mykolaiv is a part of Ukraine’s agricultural region, also having a range of educational and cultural institutions as well as a zoo.
